AED stands for automated external-defibrillator. It is a portable and light weight device to deliver electric shock via chest to heart. Shock provided by this device stop irregular beat of heart say arrhythmia and allows resuming of normal rhythm after sudden-cardiac arrest known as SCA. It occurs due to malfunctioning of heart where heart beat stops unexpectedly. If this condition is not treated immediately, heart stops working and can be the cause of death.In majority of cases SCA are result of malfunctioning of ventricular fibrillation i.e. VF. It is an unsynchronized and rapid heart rhythm originating in the lower chambers of the heart called ventricles.In this situation heart needs to be quickly defibrillated with foremost equipment because survival of chances of victims decreases by 7 to 10 percent with each passing minute when normal heart beat is not restored.


With the help of foremost equipment it has become possible to quickly respond towards needs of medical emergency foe conditions where defibrillation is needed. These are portable devices that can be utilized by the people who are non-medical say lay rescuers. Built-in computer within AED checks heart rhythm of victim via adhesive electrodes. Computer inside AED judges where there is need for defibrillation. In case it is required, recorded voice from the AED prompts rescuers to press down shock button of foremost equipment AED.Due to this shock, heart will be momentarily shocked and stops activity. This shock gives chance for resuming of heart beat effectively. Voice directions provide guidance to users throughout the process. Shocks are advised by AEDs only in case of ventricular fibrillation. This is also directed in case of other conditions called pulseless ventricular-tachycardia that also endanger life.


AEDs are easy to use and can be availed by non-medical persons such as lay rescuers, security guards, flight attendants, fire personnel, police etc.It is not important to get formal training for using AED. Training makes a person confident for its use. General public can also use AEDs. In majority of cases audible audio prompts are used for guiding users during the whole process.

All of these first response devices and vehicles including law enforcing vehicles, ambulances, fire engines and AEDs must have AED. It should be placed in various public areas like doctor`s offices, schools, hotels, convention centers, businesses, airplanes, airports, shopping malls, sports venues etc. Other private and public places where people gather and where there is higher risk of live heart attacks. It should also be placed close to corridors, reception areas, cafeterias and elevators.
